How to make each day an adventure!


*Note: this post was written a few weeks ago and was sadly left in my drafts folder. I hope you'll still enjoy it!* 

Currently, I'm sitting in my very safe, very comfortable little hidey-hole (my room). I'm enjoying some Courtney Barnett (and eagerly awaiting her new album), I'm wearing old workout clothes, I'm alone and, quite frankly, I'm snug as a bug in a rug. I could stay here forever.

But I won't. 
Because every day should be an adventure. 
Even if things are rubbishy, and it feels like living is a chore, take the time to read my tips and inject some fun into your otherwise unfulfilling day.
Because you are worthy of an excellent, interesting life! 

So, in this rather brief blog post, I wanted to share the little adventure I had today through some pics and also impart my wisdom on how to engage with life, rather than letting it simply pass you by. 


1. Take a detour! 

Today I had a set route, one I often take from the charity shop to town (and we all know how often I go charity shopping, so you get my drift) and I decided to take a detour. It was a longer route, but it was well worth it. 

A detour may take up a few extra minutes of your day but it takes you places you've never been before, or maybe you have, who knows. Anyway, it's interesting, and you might find some places you'd like to revisit. For example, I walked past my favourite charity shop and recorded their opening hours for this weekend, which are sporadic at best and are only ever posted on their window. I hope to visit there tomorrow! See, a little added sparkle to my day. 

It's also really nice to be especially mindful of your surroundings on a detour. You might spot something cool! It can act as a kind of meditation too, which is always a bonus. 


2. Be open to sociability: smile and wave boys, smile and wave.

I've had quite a few unexpected interactions over the past few days. Whether it's due to merely removing my headphones as a friendly face approaches, or just my cordial mood, I do not know. But it was so nice to talk to these strangers. These days everyone is so terrified to talk to each other. The level of avoidance is soul-destroying. 

So talk! Smile at people! Perhaps, if you're feeling extravagant, strike up a conversation about the book a person's reading or compliment their shoes. We're all human and they most likely don't bite!


3. The right music is crucial (and please feel free to sing!) 

The right tunes can add a wonderful glint to an otherwise non-sparkly day. Plus, if you sing your heart at least partially out while taking that detour, you can release all that pent up energy that I know I certainly feel after a stressful week. Be sure to ensure that no-one's around if you're anything like me singing-wise (aka rubbish) though...

Imposters: a story about a Capgras delusion

  It's cold. I'm always so cold. My hands quiver blue and wrists bloom purple, after days of bang, bang, banging my wrist on the arm of my chair. I don't think I'm okay, but I don't think I'm not okay either. I think, I think, I think I'm breaking. I am on the children's ward. I have not seen my real parents for months. Some strange people visit sometimes. I hide from them. They are not my parents. They are often nice and I begin to trust them, then they'll do something off-kilter and I shy away again, like a beaten dog.  I had climbed out of a window, bawled through the lane outside the house and taken solace at a friend's home up the road. Gently I was led back to my childhood home and bundled into the car, driven to the hospital and admitted in hopes of finding a way to avoid another inpatient admission. Section three - a mental hospital anecdote

  There is so much that I can't tell you about my third admission, so much I can't remember. Illness blurs the details and the privacy I owe to my friends erases the daily minutiae of the unit. In short, I had been sectioned - section three, six months. A treatment order, that in retrospect, could probably have been avoided. Or maybe that is just what I like to tell myself when I think about it late at night.  I had found myself in a field, shivering in the early evening sun. It was July, I was in love, but still very, very ill. I had been taken on four occasions to our local accident and emergency department that week. I was, as I read later in my unit-admission report, 'no longer manageable in the community'. I was sad, but determined. I was determined to make an exit any way I could. Instead I was flown to Woking, heavily sedated - so much so that I have no memory of the journey there and was deemed 'unresponsive' in my admission interview.  I digress. So man
